Description/
Drawing on the concept of participation, “Striking Confluence” encompasses the elements of baseball, interactivity, and technological art, through which the public can readily form a connection with both the Taipei Cultural and Sports Park (Taipei Dome), and public art. On the top of the work are multiple pieces of acrylic, cut and formed into the shape of a baseball. An engraved image of a moment in time as a pitcher throws a ball is shown on each acrylic piece when illuminated by the lighting from beneath, and, when played continuously, it has the effect of a work of animation. Thin sheets of metal holding the spherical acrylic structure in place represent the stitches on a baseball, as well as fingers throwing a ball at the instant of a pitch; they also serve to keep both the acrylic ball and the lighting device in position. The movable ball positioned on top of the pedestal has an interactive function to engage the public. By moving the ball, people form a bond not only with the cultural and sporting scene in Taipei, but also with public art. Moving the ball also directs how the illuminated animation of the pitch plays out, so that the public can also experience the lighting interacting with the installation. The three baseball bats supporting the body of the work represent a trophy, a torch, and a crowd supporting the sport of baseball, the Dome, and the sporting culture of Taiwan.
