 Kun’s Depths to Peng’s Heaven
Kun’s Depths to Peng’s Heaven
Yang Tsun-Chih

Description/

Gathering flowing curvilinear masses into a single form, this work unites the imagery of fish and bird, symbolizing the streams of young students who arrive in succession, and the glory of Chien Hua as they spread their wings and soar into the skies after completing their studies. Within Chien Hua’s school-based curriculum, students are led to trace the source of water in Hsinchu by visiting the city’s mother river and surveying the waters surrounding the campus. This public artwork likewise evokes that experiential setting in imagination, suggesting through metaphor the capacity to perceive and cherish the subtle intricacies of the natural world, while emphasizing the intimate bond between humanity and the living environment. As sung in the revised school song of 2025: “Behold the vast azure sea where the mighty Kun turns and leaps; behold the immeasurable heavens where the great Peng cries forth in sovereign flight.” This line draws upon the classic passage from Zhuangzi, Free and Easy Wandering, and accords perfectly with the spirit embodied in this work. It not only symbolizes and affirms the students of Chien Hua as they pursue learning like hidden dragons and swimming fish while holding lofty aspirations within their hearts; it also extols Chien Hua Junior High School as an oceanic wellspring abundant with the energy of education, trusting that those who graduate from Chien Hua will surely journey through a thousand miles like the great Peng and soar freely across the heavens.
